iPhone IMEI check: find it, check it, stay safe

The IMEI is your iPhone's unique ID. Checking it is the fastest way to avoid buying a stolen, blacklisted or fake iPhone.

How to find your iPhone's IMEI

  1. Dial *#06# in the Phone app. The IMEI (and EID on eSIM phones) appears on screen.
  2. Settings › General › About and scroll to IMEI and Serial Number.
  3. SIM tray on some models, or the original box label.
  4. If the phone won't turn on, the IMEI is shown on Apple's account site under your devices.

How to check if an iPhone is blacklisted in South Africa

Networks block the IMEI of phones reported lost or stolen. Ask the seller to put your SIM in and make a call; ask your network to check the IMEI; or use a GSMA-based device checker used by phone traders. A blacklisted iPhone won't work on SA networks.

How to check Activation Lock (iCloud lock)

Apple no longer offers a public iCloud-status checker. Instead, make sure the phone is erased in front of you and reaches the "Hello" screen, then go through setup with your own Apple ID. If it shows "iPhone Locked to Owner" or asks for someone else's Apple ID, the seller must remove it from their account first, or don't buy it.

Check the serial number with Apple

Enter the serial number at Apple's "Check Coverage" page to confirm the model, a valid purchase date and any remaining AppleCare or warranty cover.
