iPhone battery health and charging problems

Batteries wear out with use. Here is how to check yours, when a replacement makes sense and how to fix common charging problems.

How to check battery health

Go to Settings › Battery › Battery Health (or Battery Health & Charging). "Maximum Capacity" shows how much charge the battery holds compared with new. On iPhone 15 and newer, Settings › General › About also shows the cycle count.

When should you replace the battery?

Apple designs batteries to keep about 80% of their capacity after 500 full cycles (iPhone 14 and earlier) or 1,000 cycles (iPhone 15 and newer). Below 80%, or if you see a "Service" message or unexpected shutdowns, it's time for a replacement. Use Apple, an Apple Authorised Service Provider or a reputable repairer, and ask whether the battery is genuine.

How to save battery

  • Turn on Low Power Mode when you need to stretch a charge.
  • Lower screen brightness or use Auto-Brightness.
  • Check Settings › Battery for apps using the most power.
  • Use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data where you can.
  • Keep the phone out of heat (dashboards, direct sun).

iPhone not charging? Try this

  1. Try a different cable and adapter (look for MFi-certified or USB-C PD chargers).
  2. Clean the port gently with a wooden toothpick: lint is the most common cause.
  3. Force restart the phone (see the button sequence).
  4. If it says "Charging on hold", let it cool down.
  5. Still not charging? The port or battery may need repair.

Frequently asked questions

What is good battery health on an iPhone?

Above 85% is good; 80% is Apple's threshold for replacement.

Why is my iPhone not charging?

Most often a dirty port or a faulty cable. Clean the port, try another cable and adapter, then force restart.
