Contract vs cash calculator
How iPhone contracts work in South Africa
Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C sell iPhones on 24- and 36-month contracts that bundle the phone with data, minutes and SMS. Retailers such as Game, Makro and iStore also sell network contracts. You need to pass a credit check, and the phone is effectively paid off through the monthly fee. "Double deals" or "2 for 1 deals" bundle two phones (or a phone and a tablet or watch) on one contract.
Things to compare
- The total cost: monthly price × months + any upfront payment.
- Annual price increases on the monthly fee.
- How much data you actually get and whether it rolls over.
- Whether the iPhone model is current: older models are often bundled into cheaper deals.
- Early cancellation fees if you want out.
When buying pre-owned is better
- You want to own the phone outright and switch networks freely.
- You're blacklisted or don't want a credit check: a cash purchase needs none.
- You'd rather pay less in total: a pre-owned iPhone plus a SIM-only or prepaid plan is often thousands of rand cheaper over 36 months.
When a contract can make sense
- You want the newest iPhone and can't pay upfront.
- You would buy a similar data bundle anyway, and the deal includes the phone at a low effective cost.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get an iPhone on contract if I am blacklisted?
Network contracts require a credit check, so it is unlikely. Buying a pre-owned iPhone for cash avoids credit checks entirely.
What is an iPhone double deal?
A contract that bundles two devices (for example two iPhones, or an iPhone and a tablet) on one monthly payment.
Is it cheaper to buy an iPhone cash or on contract?
